Florence Markofer Elementary School History

Florence Markofer Elementary School is named after Florence Markofer, an active community person and a local historian who was also an educator. Florence Polhemus Markofer was a graduate of Elk Grove High School in its early days. She lived her entire life within the community of Elk Grove. She was a dedicated person who gave unselfishly of her time and energy to assist others. Prior to the opening of Florence Markofer Elementary School, Elk Grove schools had only been named after persons no longer living (Anna Kirchgater and Isabelle Jackson, for example), this was the first time the unified school district named a school to recognize the contributions of a living person.
